This page is dedicated purely to the genetics found in South Africa and the names that we categorize them as. If you use International websites, you shall soon discover that different Clubs and Associations within the Rat Fancy use different names to describe a certain genetic make up.
You shall notice that we use the termonoligy "Hetrozygous" and "Homozygous" with regards to an Agouti based rat.
Homozygous is written as A/A, which means that the Agouti is pure Agouti and does not carry the black gene "a"
Hetrozygous is written as A/a, which means that the Agouti carries the black gene "a".
If two Homozygous Agouti's were paired the resulting litter would be pure Agouti, but if we paired two Hetrozygous Agouti's we would have a litter resulting in:
25% Homozygous Agouti kits - A/A
50% Hetrozygous Agouti kits - A/a
25% Black kits - a/a

Punnet Square Example
This shows how a recessive will work and how we use punnet squares to try and determine or estimate the colour variety outcome for a litter:
The example shown below is by using a:
Cinnamon Doe, that is Hetrozygous Agouti - A/a m/m (We have included D/D in the punnet square, so that calculations can be shown, as we know the doe has no Russian Blue Recessive Genes within her line, hence the D/D to reflect that aspect.
Russian Blue Buck, that carriers mink - a/a d/d M/m

A/a – D/d – M/m |
A/a – D/d – m/m |

a/a – D/d – M/m |
a/a – D/d – m/m |
The Outcome of this litter is:
25% Agouti (Hetrozygous) - A/a - D/d - M/m (these kits now carry Russian Blue and Mink)
25% Cinnamon - A/a - D/d - m/m (these kits now carry Russian Blue)
25% Black - a/a - D/d - M/m (these kits now carry Russian Blue and Mink)
25% Mink - a/a - D/d - m/m (these kits now carry Russian Blue)
