Majority of people have the impression that we breed rats to supply the demand made by our supporters, unfortunately this is not true. 

Each litter that we produce within our Rattery has a purpose, if there is no purpose for improving a line, adding something to an existing line or test pairing to prove a colour variety etc then we shall not do a pairing. Selections are based off of what we would like to achieve with each pairing. First and foremost, conformation is something we prioritize as our number one goal, due to this been linked to health and again it is improving the line with regards to how a rat should look.

We select a minimum of 1 future breeding animal from each litter, usually 2 just so that we have a back up, should our first selected candidate not be able to produce or if illness presents itself prior to using him/her. Usually a 2 does (females) are selected from litters, a buck (male) shall be selected only if he surpasses the Sire (Dad) of the litter, again a buck can be used multiple times for breeding, whereas a doe is usually only bred once in her lifetime.

By only doing pairings of what is required for us to continue and improve our lines, we are able to keep numbers low. If we had chosen to breed for demand and produce what is wanted by our supporters, we would lose the plot of improving our lines and ideally just mass produced.

So when you see a litter born here at Maharaj, understand that these little ones have a purpose, that the risk we took in pairing the parents was to improve and maintain the line and that these little critters shall be the ones continuing the legacy their parents and grandparents began.
