Future Breeding Stock Selection

When litters are born, we do not decide what our hold back buck or doe may be based off colour variety. There are multiple factors that come into play and we have to ensure that the best is selected as to ensure that the line is improved with the following generation.

It is easy for some to select kits for future breeding plans based off of colour expressed, and although you shall achieve a full litter possibly of that colour variety, you may indeed not be selecting the best rat over all to continue and improve your line.

We at Maharaj select based off the best overall rat at the time of selection, meaning that Conformation is paramount in our selection process, shape of head, tail, body, ears and size of eyes. There shall be other factors helping us decide as well, like temperament, but colour is usually the very last thing that we shall consider when it comes to selections.

For instance, there may be a rat that has the colour we are wanting to produce or perhaps the markings, but he or she may not be the best overall rat with regards to conformation, perhaps small eyes are present or a thin tail. If we decided to keep this rat and use it in future pairings it would not be beneficial to improving our lines and thus would have been considered a "waste" of a pairing and purely breeding to create litters, rather than pairing to improve the line.

Do understand that you are not getting substandard rats as pets, but by us selecting the very best, we are hoping that one day each and every kit in a litter shall have the same type as each other.
